| Lesson One: Parts of Speech
The parts of speech are very important in the English Language. Any language really. You need them in order to form a sentence.
There are eight parts of speech.
Verb Noun Pronoun Adjective Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection
In the next couple of lessons I will tell you what each part of speech is and what it does. Also I shall illustrate its importance.
Verb: The Verb is considered the most important part of a sentence. The verb is used to assert something about the Subject of the sentence. It expresses action, events, or states of being. The verb is a critical part to the predicate of a sentence.
EXP: The dog ran across the road.
Ran is the verb of the sentence. Dog is the subject of the sentence.
Bella was excited about the dinner dance.
Excited is the action word.
A way to figure out what the verb is... take the word you think it is... and say the sentence...
Bella was ______ about the dance.
Bella was what about the dance?
In early October, Giselle will plant twenty tulip bulbs.
Will plant is what we call a compound verb.
If you take out will plant... it won't make sense.
In early October, Giselle twenty tulip bulbs.
What is Giselle doing with the twenty tulip bulbs?
So you must include the will plant.
My first teacher was Miss Crawford, but I remember the janitor Mr. Weatherbee more vividly.
In this sentence, the verb "was" identifies a particular person and the verb "remembered" describes a mental action.
Your Homework. I want you practice finding the verb.
Underline the verbs in the following sentences. 1. Dr. Greene drives to the hospital every day. 2. Mrs. Jones loves to go ice skating. 3. There is a clown doing magic tricks in the mall. 4. My teacher is going to take us to the zoo. 5. My father takes us hiking every Saturday. 6. Sam always wants to play PlayStation. 7. The postman walks every day, except Sunday. 8. The baker bakes great cakes. 9. The waitress served us Coke. 10. Doctors work both day and night. | |
